Special Education Instructional Specialist Position Overview (Itinerant)
212 Day Employee ~ Reports to Special Populations Coordinator 

The Special Education Instructional Specialist supports high-quality instruction for scholars with diverse learning needs by coaching teachers and supporting the implementation of individualized services. This role collaborates with teachers to strengthen instructional practices, support IEP implementation, and monitor scholar progress. The Instructional Specialist also participates in the teacher evaluation process through classroom observations and coaching cycles designed to promote instructional growth and effective inclusive practices. Education and Certification. 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • Valid South Carolina Special Education teaching certification
  • Experience serving as a mentor teacher, instructional coach, or teacher leader.
  • Experience participating in the teacher evaluation system. Experience conducting classroom observations and providing instructional feedback.
  • ADEPT evaluator certification or eligibility to obtain ADEPT certification Education and Certification
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • Valid Special Education teaching certification.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong understanding of evidence-based instructional strategies for scholars with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of IEP development, goal writing, and progress monitoring.
  • Ability to coach and support teachers in implementing inclusive instructional practices.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Ability to facilitate coaching cycles and provide constructive feedback to teachers.

  • Demonstrates understanding of the needs of diverse learners, including scholars with disabilities, multilingual learners, gifted scholars, and scholars requiring academic or behavioral interventions.
  • Applies evidence-based strategies to support inclusive learning environments and equitable access to instruction.
Compliance and Professional Responsibility
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations related to special education, Section 504, and support programs.
  • Ensures confidentiality and ethical handling of scholar information and records.
  • Completes required documentation and responsibilities in accordance with established timelines and procedures. Instructional Support and Scholar Advocacy
  • Advocates for practices that support scholar access, engagement, and academic growth.
  • Supports educators in implementing accommodations, interventions, and instructional strategies that address diverse learning needs. Professional Growth
  • Engages in ongoing professional learning related to best practices for supporting diverse learners.
  • Reflects on practice and seeks opportunities to improve professional knowledge and effectiveness.

As a 212 day employee, this position will be paid on the teacher salary schedule. The starting salary for all lead teachers at LSC is $53,000, with the potential for a first-year teacher to earn up to a total compensation package of $63,000 with performance pay, perfect attendance, and additional work stipends. All full-time employees receive six personal days and a $500 mental wellness stipend. The salary for this position is very competitive and commensurate with experience.
